So the Institution at the Institute is to retire, well sort of. Although he joined the Institute of Packaging just five years ago, John Webb-Jenkins' persona and enthusiasm for the job ensured he rapidly became recognised as 'Mr IoP', stamping his authority on the chief executive post to such a degree that it is difficult to believe his tenure is but half a decade.
However, it is unlikely that next May will see John completely sever his links with the industry. Although he is offering no clues at the moment, it is difficult to believe JWJ will ever disappear off the packaging radar completely.
And what a time to relinquish his official duties. Five years ago his objective was to "transform the Institute into the acknowledged 'Centre of Excellence' for education and training". Given the recent announcements about the metamorphosis the Institute is about to make, it's mission accomplished; almost.
The final touches and fulfilment of the new vision for the Institute is down to his successor, Lynda Purser. There will be changes as the IoP grows into, and adjusts to its revitalised role. And, having met the new chief executive, I can assure you that whatever needs to be done, will be.
