Optimism, but shows to get a "close look"
29 November, 2005
The PPMA says, although visitor numbers at its long-established UK packaging and processing machinery trade exhibition have shown a "slow decline" since 2000, "in line with most UK trade exhibitions", this year's event "gave considerable cause for optimism". Chris Buxton, the Association's new ceo, talked to many exhibitors and was pleased that "many described the second and third days as amongst the busiest in the show's history". He adds: "Although attendance has been slightly down in recent years, with more companies taking smaller stands and sending fewer representatives in line with today's pressures on efficient resource use, I received very positive feedback from numerous exhibitors this year. There was a particularly good buzz about the second day. We are seeing greater emphasis on decision-making visitors." While the PPMA hails this year's show and the concurrent, first ever Packaging Innovation Show as "generally very successful", it acknowledges "UK manufacturing industries are challenging" and admits that, "as organisers, we need to listen carefully to both exhibitors and visitors. Buxton says the Association and show organiser Reed Exhibitions will thus be "sitting down to take a careful look" in the next few months at how the three key shows – PPMA, the Packaging Innovation Show and Total – can best work in tandem in the future.
