Print Design and Graphics - Folding carton specialist the Benson Group has made Ian Ballantyne general manager of Print Design and Graphics, its Newcastle facility, where he will be responsible for the company’s financial and operational performance, including its 193 staff. Before joining the group, Ballantyne was plant manager for packaging and effervescent production at French-owned pharma giant Sanofi-Aventis.

Allied Glass - Richard Johnson has been promoted to continuous improvement manager for the company’s Leeds and Knottingley sites by Yorkshire-based glass container manufacturer Allied Glass, having begun his career with the company in 1994 as quality control assistant. With a brief to “create an environment of best practice”, Johnson will oversee product quality, integrated management systems and delivery of a continuous improvement strategy.

Europen - the European Organisation for Packaging and the Environment, has elected Dr Eric Johnson, manager – strategic relations at ExxonMobil, as its new chairman. SCA Packaging’s John Swift and Groupe Danone’s Jean-Pierre Rennaud will assist him as first and second vice-chairman. Having studied Chemistry at Oxford University before spells at Procter & Gamble’s r&d centres in Newcastle and Brussels, Johnson subsequently worked for Dow and Unilever before joining ExxonMobil in 1981. One of Europen’s founders, this is his second spell as chairman.

Newman Labelling Systems - Chris Lindley-Smith has joined pharmaceutical labelling specialist Newman Labelling Systems as European sales manager from UK distributor Partners in Packaging, where he was UK sales manager responsible for a specific labelling system range. His initial priority will be establishing contact with, and building on, Newman’s the UK and Irish customer base.

Weber Marking Systems - Rejoining Weber Marking Systems as national sales manager, UK and Ireland is Mark O’Donnell, who spent four years with the company before leaving last year to take up a sales management role elsewhere in the coding industry. Having begun his career with Markem in 1983, O’Donnell has nearly 25 years’ coding and labelling experience.

Crown - John Clinton, 50, previously in the same role within the company’s European beverage can business, has been appointed senior vice-president, sourcing Europe, at Crown, where he will be responsible for purchasing for Crown’s European division in areas including beverages, food, aerosols, speciality packaging and closures.
