Ralph J Olson, outgoing president and ceo of IWKA packaging machinery subsidiary RA Jones & Co, has been succeeded by Gordon B Bonfield, who joins Jones from Quick Pak, where he was president. Olson remains chairman of Jones' board. Before moving to Quick Pak Bonfield held a variety of senior positions, including executive vice-president and ceo, at Ivex Packaging Corporation. A former president of James River Corporation's Packaging business, he has 30 years' packaging industry experience.

Sato Europe has appointed Schering-Plough Benelux's former customer service and logistics manager Luc De Visscher as its new operations manager. To be based at the company's Brussels office, De Visscher has an extensive operations management background, having previously worked in senior customer service and operations roles at Bridgestone Tyres and Novartis Consumer Health.

Recruited to strengthen Sato Europe's leading position in wireless and traditional traceability solutions, Christian Raux has joined the company as sales manager. In the past 12 years he has worked in the automatic ID and data collection field for companies including Intermec, Proxim and LXE.

Business management graduate and pharmaceutical packaging specialist Henrik Nichols is the new sales manager, medical, at German flexible packaging manufacturer Kobusch-Sengewald, a member of the Pactiv Group.

Pascal Ray, formerly logistics manager at Crown Bevcan France's Custines factory, has been appointed supply chain manager for Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East. Ray, who already manages supply chain activities within Crown's World Class Performance programme, will be based in Paris, reporting to senior vice-president John Clinton. He will work closely with Cuneyt Varturk, formerly Crown Bevcan Europe & Middle East's logistics controller, who has recently been appointed planning and logistics manager.

To help strengthen its European OEM channel, Domino Printing Sciences has appointed Stephen Hancock to the newly created role of European OEM manager. Hancock began his graphic arts career in 1994 as a sales executive, joining Domino as area sales manager in 1994. He will work closely with OEMs to ensure the best integrated solutions are provided to customers in the printing and mailing industries.

Thermo Electron Corporation has promoted its former service manager Craig Stevenson to the role of operations manager, based at its Welwyn Garden City division. Drawing on wide-ranging customer care experience gained in the food and pharmaceutical sectors, Stevenson's remit will include improving quality and reducing lead times, alongside managing the assembly department and machine shop operations. Also joining Thermo Electron are Christopher Anderton, who will manage field sales for the Coding division's southern sales team, and new service supervisor Matthew Spreckley.

John Steel has been appointed to the newly created role of managing director at independent contract packer Corby Bottlers in Corby, Northamptonshire. He says: "We are enjoying significant growth in volumes and new opportunities are opening up all the time." An engineer by training, Steel has been the company's production director for the past three years.

Fast-growing corrugated fibreboard packaging manufacturer Rigid Corrugated has expanded its Desborough-based sales back-up team with two new staff. Theresa Miller was formerly logistics controller at Corby-based Willett, while Colleen White joins Rigid after successfully graduating in sociology.

Laser technology expert David Miller, who has held a number of technical, marketing and management positions within the laser industry since graduating with a BSc in physics in 1979, is to head up business development activities at Sherwood Technology, the colour change chemistry specialist and developer of DataLase coding and marking technology.

Leading supply chain specialist Exel has underlined its fast-growing position as a co-packer to UK manufacturers and retailers with the appointment of Lynn Grady as general manager, co-packing services. Grady joins Exel with over two decades' experience in contract packaging with TDG, where she was responsible for quality, efficiency, business development and financial performance across six contract packing sites.

Jurgen Waldhausen, who has held several service management positions at Ricoh Germany and Canon Germany, has joined industrial printing company Printronix as the company's new spares and services sales manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa. He will report directly to Europe, Middle East and Africa vice-president, sales and marketing, Claus Hinge.

Wiesbaden-headquartered smart card and RFID specialist ACG Identification has opened a Sydney office, which will be headed by recently appointed country sales manager for Australia and New Zealand Tony Hilder. Hilder's previous experience includes spells with Johnson Controls, Chubb and, most recently, smart card technology developer Smart Silicon Systems.

Strathclyde University graduate Ian Marr, whose extensive plastics sector experience includes spells at the National Engineering Laboratory and the Shell-Esso-NEL Consortium, has become the seventh member of Faraday Plastics' technology translator team. Marr has particular expertise in developing commercial spin-out companies from academic innovation.
