THOMAS BRUCKENBERGER - chairman of the executive board

Flexible packaging and technical films manufacturer Nordenia International has appointed Thomas Bruckenberger chairman of its executive board. Bruckenberger, 49, previously Nordenia's vice-executive chairman, replaces Ralph Landwehr, 48, in the role. An MBA in economical engineering and a member of Nordenia's executive board since 1996, Bruckenberger joined Nordenia from CarnaudMetalbox Packaging after a seven-year spell managing CMB group companies producing food cans.

CARL BJORNBERG - chairman

Carl Bjornberg, chief executive officer of the Myllykoski Corporation, is the new chairman of the Confederation of European Paper Industries, succeeding Michael Groller. The holder of a Masters degree in political science from Helsinki University, Bjornberg joined Myllykoski in 1964, becoming the firm's president in 1978. Elected chairman of Myllykoski Paper in 1996, he is currently a member of the board and executive committee of the Central Association of Finnish Forest Industries.

MICHAEL O'DELL - engineering manager

Improving quality, machine reliability and performance following the introduction of new machine productivity programmes will be among key responsibilities for Michael O'Dell who has beeen appointed Rigid Corrugated's new engineering manager.

Meanwhile, joining the company as health and safety manager at Rigid Corrugated's Desborough plant is Glenn Davies. His key responsibilities will include driving forward implementation of BRC/IoP hygiene accreditation and carrying out a major review of health and safety policy.

DEREK MOORE - managing director

Sussex & Berkshire Machinery founder and former managing director Derek Moore has relinquished his interests in the company and now plans focussing, as managing director, on building up the Stickpack liquid and powder stickpacking business he established five years ago. The two companies will continue operating from the same Alton offices but will now be run as separate businesses. Moore is succeeded as S&B managing director by Russell Gardner who is joined on a restructured board by sales director Andy Bannister, technical director Gary Caswell and operations director Patrick Davies. All are now Sussex and Berkshire shareholders.

DR PAUL SHIPTON - head of plastics technology

Leading polymer research and test house Rapra Technology has appointed Dr Paul Shipton as head of its plastics technology consultancy. Previously with Ticona UK for 11 years, Shipton will run Rapra's 10-strong plastics technology team. With a first class degree in polymer technology, he has special expertise in plastics compound manufacturing.

TONY KELLY - technical sales and development manager

Returning to Hull-based Harlands Labels as technical sales and development manager after a spell with the company in the 90s is 48-year-old Tony Kelly. Kelly, who has over 25 years' experience in the print industry, will support the existing sales force and be responsible for identifying and implementing new technologies.

DON STOEBE - vice-president and general manager

Avery Dennison Corporation has appointed Don Stoebe as vice-president and general manager, Roll Materials Europe, to lead the Corporation's European Roll Materials businesses. Stoebe joined Avery Dennison's Fasson Roll North America organisation in 1983 as process development engineer and has been with the company ever since. He was most recently vice-president and general manager of the Roll Materials Europe division's US Specialty Tape Division.

PATRICK FRIMAT - managing director

Patrick Frimat, who has worked for the past 12 years in the US, has been appointed managing director at Sato Europe where his key focus will be spearheading European and Middle Eastern expansion and improving customer service to European customers. Frimat, who has extensive Auto ID industry expertise, says a key priority will be expanding Sato's Brussels office.

Sato has also appointed Tatsumi Inui, with the firm since 1979, as its general manager.

LORRAINE PERKINS - customer services supervisor

Former Andersen Consulting employee Lorraine Perkins, who has 10 years' customer sales and IT experience, has joined Thermo Electron Corporation as the company's new customer services supervisor.

GRANT SLACKE - major accounts manager, northern Europe

Printronix, manufacturer of integrated enterprise printing solutions for the supply chain, has appointed Grant Slacke as major accounts manager for northern Europe and strategic alliance manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

Reporting directly to areas sales manager for northern Europe Chris Manning and EMEA vice-president, sales and marketing Claus Hinge, Slacke will develop Printronix sales in north Europe and maintain relationships with key resellers and distributors.

LAURENCE PEYRONNET - business development manager

Laurence Peyronnet has taken on the role of business development manager at Valois Pharmaceutical. Before joining Valois she held the same position at biotech company Meristem Therapeutics.

OBITUARY - RON GODDARD

Well-known industry figure and, latterly, packaging journalist Ron Goddard - a man credited with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the sector - has died, aged 71. Having begun his career with Tate & Lyle in 1952, he spent 18 years as an industrial chemist, during which he developed an interest in packaging. This led to him to join Pira's Packaging division in 1970, where he focussed on retail packaging. On leaving Pira in 1985 he spent 12 years giving his technical expertise and enthusiasm to Packaging Week before retiring in 1997 to devote himself to his family, the Lions, photography and travel. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Jenny, two sons and three grandchildren.
