Zebra committed to EPCglobal UHF RFID technology

5 July 2004

Zebra Technologies has hosted a two-day meeting in Chicago of key Freedom team, Global team, and EPCglobal personnel to define a consensus proposal for the EPCglobal Generation 2 RFID protocol standard. Zebra solidly supports a consensus proposal as being in the interest of end-users.

Zebra previously reviewed both the Global and the Freedom team proposals under consideration by the EPCglobal Hardware Action Group and concluded that both adequately address technical considerations. While Zebra feels a consensus solution best meets the needs of the industry and end-users, Zebra would support either the Global or Freedom proposals should one be adopted.

Zebra Technologies also supports the EPCglobal's IP policy. Earlier this year Zebra signed the EPCglobal's IP policy and supports open access to IP by the providers of RFID technology and services.

By signing the EPCglobal's IP agreement, Zebra has agreed to make any of its intellectual property relative to the practice of a Generation 2 RFID standard available to all EPCglobal members on a royalty-free basis. Zebra believes that access to IP among the EPCglobal member community best supports product innovation and rapid adoption of RFID.
