Wincanton wins P&G contract

16 March 2006

Procter & Gamble has awarded leading European supply chain company Wincanton a contract to manage re-packaging and customisation activities for its UK Fabric and Homecare business.

Wincanton will oversee the business’s entire re-packaging process, from packaging specification and design through to packing activities. Examples of the customisations include triple pack promotions, display pallets and semi-pallets.

A specially lit “white room” will be established in the warehouse to undertake the work, while a customised warehouse and production management system will be implemented for inventory control and batch traceability.

Girish Deshpande, product supply, Procter & Gamble, says: “Our customisation needs have increased and will continue to do so to meet retailer and consumer needs. We have to ensure we’re always ahead of the game by having the right capability in place to meet both short and long-term demand. Wincanton already has a proven track record in supply chain operation with P&G, managing our automated UK distribution centre in West Thurrock.”

Jeff Anderson, md, Manufacturing, Wincanton, adds: “We are able to offer Procter & Gamble more than packaging design. Its packaging has to withstand transportation and display without damage and we will incorporate this into the design stage. We are already on site, which means we can react quickly to demand. We will also pack products into promotional packs and ensure goods are delivered on time.”
