UK FSA labelling system faces challenge from European Parliament

9 January 2009

The UK Food Standards Agency's (FSA's) traffic light food labelling scheme is being challenged by the proposals of a European Parliament (EP) committee which aims to prevent countries from operating their own national labelling schemes alongside the EU-wide scheme which has already been agreed upon. The committee is arguing that if EU members are allowed to operate their own systems then consumers will be confused. It argues that it will create more distortions of competition within the internal market and will undermine legal certainty. Neville Craddock, regulatory affairs expert, has stated that that the FSA may still be able to proceed with its own scheme if it argues that its system is voluntary.
