UK can shipments up despite poor weather

11 September 2012

First half 2012 figures released by The Can Makers, the body representing UK manufacturers of beverage cans, have revealed that total can market shipments in the grew almost 2% to 4,699 million cans in total.

The figure was described as “a creditable achievement” given the challenging economic climate and poor early summer weather across the UK.

Celebrations for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and the UEFA European Football Championship are said to have contributed to growth of 2.4% in January to June 2012 in shipments of beer and cider cans, up by 51 million to 2,159 million cans shipped in total.

Empty can shipments for carbonated soft drinks also saw growth of 1.5% in January to June 2012, with 37 million more units shipped in 2012 than 2011, bringing the total of cans for soft drinks shipped in the first half of 2012 to 2,540 million.

“The statistics show that cans continue to do well despite a tough economic market and bad summer weather, due to consumer convenience and competitive retail prices,” says Geoff Courtney, chairman of The Can Makers, now part of a European network set up under the auspices of Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME).

“Overall, we are pleased to see that cans are still a preferred pack of choice in the UK”.
