Thirteen top grocery retailers have underlined their commitment to waste minimisation in a new initiative to reduce the amount of packaging and food waste thrown away by the British public.
Asda, Boots, Budgens, the Co-operative Group, Londis, Iceland, Kwik Save, Marks & Spencer, Morrison's, Sainsbury's, Somerfield, Tesco and Waitrose have joined forces with the government-backed Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP)by pledging their commitment supporting WRAP in its key objectives: designing out packaging waste growth by 2008, delivering absolute reductions in packaging waste by March 2010, and identifying ways to tackle food waste.
The so-called Courtauld Commitment took shape at a ministerial meeting held at London's Courtauld Gallery earlier this year, at which Environment Minister Elliot Morley and WRAP chief executive officer Jennie price met senior representatives from top retailers and the British Retail Consortium.
Each retailer will now develop its own work programme, with several already undertaking projects on packaging reduction funded through an £8m WRAP "innovation fund".
