Top packs get recognition

Field Packaging, which won a record seven Starpacks, and SCA were among the most successful entrants in this year's Institute of Packaging Starpack Awards, with the winners of the Gold and Sponsored Awards feted during a glittering evening event hosted by BBC presenter Natasha Kaplinsky during the Total exhibition.

Field Bradford's tally included Consumer Gold for its round shouldered flip-top cigarette pack for Gallaher's S.T. Dupont brand, which the judges felt "exuded quality and met the brief to appeal to the fashion-conscious male".

Printed on Invercote Albato, the cartons feature a special holographic foil blocked security feature. The same site received the Pro Carton Award for Best in Creative Cartonboard Packaging - Food for its Glenfiddich Gift Box for Wm Grant. The judges praised the "well-thought out design", the board's 'leatherette' feel, the subtle deboss effect and the effective display, as well as the wraparound labels, which they felt "shouted out" the brand.

Field East Kilbride won the Pro Carton Award for Best in Creative Cartonboard Packaging - Non-Food for its back-hinged, recloseable carton for Soapworks' fragrance burner, incorporating PET windows for optimal display.

The first of several SCA Starpacks went to the company's Speciality Products Division. Its striking four-part display unit, supplied in flatpack form for Cadbury Trebor Bassett's Dairy Milk chocolate rebranding, won a Display and Collation Gold. The judges were swayed by the unit's in-store success and its sub-three minute assembly time.

SCA Packaging North East also won a Display and Collation Gold for its reusable, refillable display unit for Nestle Rowntree confectionery products. The hand-erect one-piece box and lid has divisions to create seven different-sized cells, while the lid's additional crease and tapered sides enable it to reverse fold under the box to create an angled display.

Completing an SCA hat-trick, SCA Tuscarora won Transit Gold for its pack for five Range-style cookers, with its EPS top, base, front buffer and side panels, edge-guard and corrugated top cap and base tray.

A one-piece die-cut corrugated fibreboard cistern pack, which has reduced Twyford Bathrooms' unit costs by 14%, won Mondi Packaging Stoke the other Transit Gold.

Boxes Prestige (UK) achieved double Consumer Family success with Golds for its ribboned cartons for the Liz Earle Cosmetics Christmas Collection 2003 and its metallic printed, pearlised containers for Thorntons' chocolates.

Consumer Family Golds also went to Owens-Illinois Plastics' arched Out of the Blue Car Care Collection pack for Winplus-Europe, with mirror-effect labels [which also won the PolyOne Award for Outstanding Colour Innovation in Plastic Packaging] and The Label Studio's tactile letterpress/silkscreen labels for Federation Brewery's Venom drinks.

"Consumer" Gold winners included Garcin Design's one-piece PP pack for 17 different WH Smith stationery items, Coors Brewers' drinks glass pack for Grolsch, complete with shelf, and Rockware Glass's bottle for Morrison Bowmore's Rob Roy whisky.

The sponsored awards also recognised innovative design, exemplified by Freshorize's 3in1 soap and air freshener for Tesco, which gained the Listgrove Award for Best Design Innovation. When the soap is dispensed, the pump head simultaneously activates a metered dose of air freshener.

Scottish Courage's Kronenbourg Premier Cru 1664 Bottle, which the judges felt "gave an existing design an extra dimension" won Rockware Glass' Fresh Thinking Award for Innovation in Glass Packaging, while the RPC Award for Designer/Design House of the Year went to Blue Marlin for four separate entries, produced in cartonboard and via thermoforming, glass and plastic blowmoulding.

The "very strong branding values", strong typography, colour and logo achieved by Green & Black's Easter Egg packs won the company the Seven Worldwide Best on Pack Branding Award, while the Quantum Business Media Award for Best Label went to Fuji Seal Europe for its PET semi-transparent shrinksleeve labels for Coca-Cola's Burn Energy drink.

The PPMA-sponsored Starpack Machinery Award was won by TNA Europe for its vertical form, fill, seal machines.
