Thermal advance

A thermal transfer coder that can be used in either intermittent or continuous mode with minimal adjustment and without change parts was introduced by Markem Systems at interpack.

Claimed to be the industry's most advanced thermal transfer machine, the SmartDate (SD)5 can be supplied with either a standard "user-friendly" graphic user interface or portable SmartTouch full-colour touchscreen. Said to offer faster processing power than its predecessors, the coder interacts with other on-line devices and external databases so random weight coding and addressing applications can be carried out at production line speeds. An upgrade to SD5S specification, achievable "without major capital cost", allows use in very fast, continuous applications. The 5S variant uses advanced "shuttle" technology to achieve print speeds and acceleration profiles that Markem says other coders "can only aspire to".

Both the SD5 and SD5S can be adapted for left- or right-handed control without changeparts in under an hour, while other features include quick-release heads and connectors, "elimination" of mechanical wear parts and colour-coded components for ease of identification.
