The Power of Innovation: The characteristics of sustainability

13 July 2020

An assembly of global CEO’s in retail have come together in an intriguing webinar that uncovered the importance of innovation and how it drives sustainability in the luxury retail, hospitality and packaging industries.

Hosted by Positive Luxury, a company who acknowledges luxury lifestyle brands that are committed to sustainability, the panel included May Al-Karooni founder and CEO of Globechain a reuse marketplace for businesses; Robert Lockyer founder and CEO of luxury packaging provider Delta Global, and Martin Milesi, founder of one-table gastronomy business UNA London, each discussed the benefit of continuously innovating, and how it can ensure a brighter future for a brand.

Led by Positive Luxury’s CEO and co-founder, Diana Verde Nieto, the group discussed the importance of reconciling sustainable packaging in luxury with Robert Lockyer commenting: “It’s almost a paradox for packaging companies, it’s not about selling ‘more’ it’s about selling a ‘reduction’.

Robert said: “Brands must think about what materials we are using and why we are using them.” And, with consumers desiring a larger focus around health, wellbeing and ethics, May Al-Karooni of Globechain announced that this would be the foundation and building-blocks that retail should work to innovate.

Robert noted that as the human facing interaction has dramatically decreased during the highsteet retailer’s shutdown, the luxury retail sector was seeing an influx of online personalisation and this includes the interactive element within packaging and delivery.

“You can really see, there is a real differential between the brands that want to do it well and the brands that just want to rip it off. It’s understanding that we can’t go back to where it was, we have to embrace the new normal.”

Conclusively, the group defined the continuation of innovation to be a mix of; asking the right questions, understanding the market, building trust and transparency with your customers and being more agile to their requirements.
