Tamper-evident tub a food sector first

14 March 2007

German milk processing company Humana Milchunion is using what is claimed to be the world's first commercially launched thermoformed tamper-evident food pack, for its Sanobub ice cream brand.

The company wanted a container that combined effective product security with an easy-open design. It was also essential that it could run on the firm's existing filling lines. Working with Humana and one of its tooling suppliers, RPC Bebo Plastik concluded that a thermoformed pack would not only be lighter than an injection-moulded solution but that a polystyrene container would provide excellent impact resistance at deep-freeze temperatures.

Tamper evidence is achieved via a channel around the tub's rim, which acts as a seal when the lid is fitted. A tab incorporated into the channel enables the consumer to break the seal to open the pack.
