Super-chiller label for cans and bottles now in Europe

Introduced in America last year and used most notably by the Coors Brewing Company for a limited edition beer launch, Outlast's Cold Wrap label is a 360 deg premium wrap label with a tactile finish. The drink in the bottle or can is kept cold via coating of either just the reverse or both label faces with microscopic capsules called “thermocules”, invented by Outlast, which reportedly absorb heat and prevent it from warming the beverage. Labelling companies wishing to use the technology receive the thermocules as a special powder, which can then be added both to the label adhesive and, if required, also to printing inks. In the Coors application the thermocules were incorporated both into the label adhesive and into the white inks used to depict mountains on the eye-catching front label.

Outcast claims to have been the market leader for the so-called phase change temperature (PCM) regulating technology over the past decade; to date it has mainly been used in bedding, sports and ski clothing, general apparel, shoe and automotive applications. Now, however, the company plans targeting label producers and drinks manufacturers, with the technology's official European launch set for the Techtextil show in Frankfurt this month (June 12-14 - stand D75, Hall 3.0)

The Cold Wrap label can be applied to a variety of materials, including paper, cardboard, glass and metal. Outlast's PCM technology was originally developed for NASA to help astronauts cope with extreme temperature fluctuations in space.
