Sun Chemical's SmartColour system ensures "real colour" reproduction on packs

Sun Chemical says that, by displaying “real ink colour” on the chosen substrate – “anything from brown corrugated to clear film to white PP", and matching the desired colour with the ink that will deliver the brand, companies can “predict how their corporate spot colours swill reproduce on a wide variety of substrates”. The system, which can be used anywhere in a workflow, combines consulting support, customised brand colour standards, software and database systems, and online collaboration tools to, in Sun Chemical’s words, “create a user-friendly approach to managing spot colours”.

One key component, SmartColour iVue, “takes the guesswork out of matching the spot colour with the substrate on the computer monitor to get the exact colour brand owners require in the earliest design phase”.

“When packaging developers and printers miss the mark in attempting to match a brand’s spot colour, the error may appear at the proofing stage – leading to multiple proofs and adjustments before the customer approves the job,” says Patrice Aurenty, business leader, colour management, Sun Chemical Europe. “Such mistakes are not only expensive, but they also lead to delays in product release and order fulfilment, mounting up losses in sales. The colours that make up the SmartColour portfolio are derived from many years of close collaboration with brand owner customers who have used them to achieve consistent brand presentation, whether printing litho, gravure of flexo, time after time.”
