Students meet pack design challenge

27 February 2009

Two Suffolk University students captured the essence of innovative packaging after their concept for a novel fragrance dispenser won a design challenge at the recent easyFairs packaging exhibition.

Graphic design undergraduates Oliver Jennaway and Thomas Oliver impressed a panel of packaging experts with their prototype ‘Revolution’ – a store refillable, roller-ball bottle which dispenses the ’’perfect‘’ perfume dose with each rotation.

The student design challenge was part of the easyFairs packaging event which ran from February 11-12 at Birmingham’s NEC – a platform which allowed students to pitch their ideas to more than 4,000 brand marketers and product developers.

Six students were given a live brief at the start of the two-day show and required to develop concepts from scratch, progress them through various design stages and, thanks to on-site technology from rapid prototyper Pakready, generate working models of their creations.

Challenge co-ordinator Annette Bigglestone, from The Packaging Society, noted: “All three concepts were commercially viable…the students embraced the exhibition’s themes of innovation and sustainability in their ideas. This student challenge is a brilliant platform to showcase new talent…we risk losing this talent if we don’t offer encouragement and initiatives like this, where they can shine.”
