Stronger PE seal for Tetra Paks

10 February 2005

Tetra Pak's Tetra Brik Chilled, Tetra Top and Tetra Brik Aseptic cartons will from this month incorporate a new polyethylene-based material which the company claims will provide a stronger, tighter inner barrier seal.

The 'Wide' inner lamination material is formed from a specially developed PE, 'Metallozene', whose key claimed benefits include uniform molecular weight, polymer chain structure and polymer morphology.

Wide reportedly seals at an extended temperature range via induction heating. Tetra Pak says Wide packs will offer improved sealing and greater crack resistance than those made with current extrusion-laminated [non-film] specifications, alongside enhanced filling line efficiency.

Product manager Ian Williamson says: "Wide's introduction opens the door to the creation of new combinations of various polymer properties, including greater elasticity, a larger sealing window and improved stress crack resistance, meaning reduced sensitivity to aggressive products."
