Starpack redesigned with strategic summit

21 January 2008

The Starpack Awards have been refocused to be more market facing, covering areas such as designs for food, drink, cosmetics and pharmaceutical packaging, as well as recognising technical innovation, environmental consciousness and component development.

The plans were announced during a presentation at London's Cafe Royal, along with a Starpack Summit (see p12) to be held on the day of the awards – May 22. The inaugural conference will cover The Packaging Dilemma – the Consumer Challenge and feature a range of perspectives from brand owners and major retailers to consumer organisations and environmental groups.

The move away from a more materials-focused awards was made so that categories will be more market facing and increase their relevance to potential entrants. Gordon Stewart, of the Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, told Packaging Today: "It's always important to reinvigorate competitions otherwise they become stale.

“That's one of the things we've tried to do with Starpack. We're building on the success of last year's seminar series and combining it with the Starpack Summit, which is designed to address the big issues facing packaging over the next 12 months."

Steve Kelsey, Starpack Awards chair of judges and managing director of P13 Design, said Starpack was a fantastic medium through which to convey the important contribution of the industry to the supply chain.

The Starpack Summit, Starpack Industry Awards and Student and Schools Awards, will take place in London on May 22.
