SPS wrapper gives extra capacity for Lightbody of Hamilton

21 November 2011

Celebration Cake specialist Lightbody of Hamilton, Scotland, has increased wrapping capacity for trays of bite-size products with a new high speed flow-wrapper from Italian manufacturer SPS, part of the PFM Group.

The new machine, an SPS Regola, allows the manufacturing process to operate at increased capacity by providing speeds over 50 per cent higher than the previous line.

To provide smooth operation at these speeds the machine is equipped with a 3-metre long SPS computer controlled infeed, which includes accumulation and multi-belt phased feeding into the flighted infeed conveyor of the wrapper.

In this way, fluctuations in the arrival of product from the manufacturing process are ironed out and the machine is able to work efficiently at a more consistent speed.

The SPS Regola is also equipped with a vacuum lance that pulls excess air from the packs as they are sealed, creating a smarter, tighter appearance.

Alastair McGlashan, process improvement manager at Lightbody of Hamilton, says the machine is living up fully to expectations: "We like the build quality, which is very robust, the safety features are good and it does everything we wanted it to do."
