Spear provides Bacardi reactive labels

25 July 2012

Labelling specialist Spear has provided “interactive labels” using thermochromic inks for two new flavour extensions in the Bacardi rum range: Bacardi Wolf Berry and Bacardi Black Razz.

Once the bottles are chilled to the correct temperature for serving, the new labels – designed by Spear’s ‘Toy Box’ innovations section – reveal wolf-claw marks on the Wolf Berry flavour (infused blueberry and goji berry) and flames on Black Razz (raspberry and black sapote).

The bold images used on the label graphics pair well with the “adventurous flavours” of the new rums, the company says.

Headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio, Spear produces the multiple colours for the Bacardi labels at its Mason, Ohio facility, utilising various colors of rotary screen, hot stamp and flexographic printing.

“This combination of printing processes, first-rate inks and label materials allows Spear to achieve the animated-graphics Bacardi is aiming for,” the company says.

The two new Bacardi flavours will be launched initially in the US, Canada and Mexico, targeting younger legal-age consumer groups, and are expected to launch in Europe “in the near future”.

Bacardi will employ its Jacksonville, Tennessee plant to fill bottles for US and Canadian demand while utilising a Mexico-based plant for Mexican distributors.

Spear Toy Box seeks to develop the latest breakthroughs in film, ink and application technologies to help Spear’s customers create packaging that stands out from the crowd.
