Sony Pictures Home Entertainment worked with St Ives specialist Music and Multimedia (1) Division to produce the packaging for a limited edition, monster size Monty Python DVD box set for Christmas.
The distinctively shaped presentation case features typically bold and charismatic ‘Pythonesque’ artwork. Every Monty Python film and TV programme ever made, as well as an inflatable ‘dead parrot’ and exclusive t-shirt, are contained in seven different-sized drawers that co-ordinate with the outer casing’s novel shape.
“The entire collection has never been sold like this before and St Ives succeeded in creating fantastic packaging to ensure that Monty Python fans couldn’t fail to spot the box set in-stores in the run up to the Christmas period,” said Angel Llewellyn, Sony’s head of creative services. “The complex design by Hicksville made it a complicated job, but having worked with St Ives in the past and seeing their extensive manufacturing and design facilities, we knew they had the best capacity for carrying out a project as exceptional as this.”
Andy Kyle, key account director at St Ives, added: “Having a professional design studio on site means that we are able to offer this kind of complete and personal service to customers looking for premium packaging solutions. Our team was involved in this project from concept to creation, ensuring the customer’s needs were met at every stage and minimising any logistical issues right from the start.”.
Utilising the full range of equipment at St Ives’ Crayford site meant that almost every aspect of production, including fulfilment, was completed in-house. Both the rigid board outer slipcase and folding boxboard inner draw structure were printed on the company’s 6-colour Komori press. The folding boxboard elements were then UV coated, die cut on a flat bed Bobst and line-glued using a Vegas straight-line gluer.
