Smurfit Kappa turns paper into water

2 December 2010

Waste paper and board at water utility company South East Water’s head office in Kent, UK, is being turned into water with the help of Smurfit Kappa.

Staff throw waste paper and board into a bin, which when full is taken away by Smurfit Kappa Recycling and weighed, to be converted into cash for WaterAid. The charity runs safe water, sanitation and hygiene education projects in some of the world’s poorest communities.

The local Smurfit Kappa paper mill reprocesses the waste to produce new packaging materials.

South East Water’s recycling initiative minimises carbon emissions and supports local industry, says Sarah Lesting, Smurfit Kappa Recycling’s commercial manager for the South East.
