Smith's corrosion-free board

16 January 2006

DS Smith Tri-Wall in Monmouth says it has developed a special corrugated board for transit packaging applications impregnated with a non-toxic substance that will prevent corrosion of ferrous metal products.

Combining impregnated liner with normal grade specifications, Tri-Wall's VCI (vapour-phase corrosion inhibitor) board can be used for cases, internal fittings or both, works for up to two years, and is said to eliminate the need to grease or oil components, or wrap them in VCI bags, before transportation. These benefits eliminate the "double handling" required when using "conventional" VCI products, and reduce material costs.

The board produces a "microclimate" by emitting a non-toxic vapour that settles on exposed metal surfaces, forming a corrosion-inhibiting barrier. Early trials with a gear and cog supplier to engine plants have reportedly solved an existing abrasion and corrosion damage problem running at a level of over 10%.
