Since January 1, 2006 Directive 2004/27/CE has made applying Braille characters mandatory on all pharma packaging. Realising the rules for marking were “far from harmonised” in Europe and France, Sleever first developed a set of rules that accorded with the regulations commonly accepted within the EU. Seven main points emerged – on alignment of characters on the left, direction of reading from left to right, the distance between dots, their width and height, the distance between each group of dots, and interlines.
Sleever then perfected a marking system which “guarantees long-term durability” of Braille characters that relies on Braille “morphing” onto the sleeve, which is then heat-shrunk. A transparent protective varnish is then applied. The characters are “systematically controlled by a specific tool” to ensure the correct thickness. The system is compatible with all Sleever Technologies films and can be combined with UV flexo 10-colour back/front printing.
