Sidel gears up for Rugby World Cup with ball-shaped pack

27 July 2007

The blowmoulded pack incorporates a grainy rugby ball-like texture created by 10,000 “dimples” on four panels, authentic-looking stitches and smooth areas on the sides. Resting on a feature resembling a kicking “tee”, the bottle even has a replica inflation valve, while the labelling is base applied to avoid altering the “ball” shape.

After producing prototypes and production moulds, Sidel tested the container at its customer, water producer Eaux minerals d’Alet’s Alet-les-Bains plant in France’s Aude region; the mineral water company then undertook filling on its own lines. Bottle and cap are both blue, representing the colours of the Alet spring.

The bottles, claimed to be the world’s only existing rugby-ball shaped PET containers to house mineral water, will be sold individually during the Rugby World Cup 2007 in France at major retailers including Carrefour, Intermarché, Leclerc, Auchan, Système U, Champion and Monoprix.
