Sharpak promotes recycling in Europe

16 November 2010

Food packaging manufacturer Sharpak is helping to divert plastic packaging from landfill, as part of the Dutch recycling campaign called Plastic Heroes.

Sharpak Holland’s meat packaging for a Dutch retail group now displays the Plastic Hero logo. Consumers purchasing Sharpak products displaying the symbol will be able to deposit the empty trays in designated bags, which are put outside homes beside the normal waste collection to be taken away by dedicated waste trucks.

The closed loop system will ensure that the recycled material is converted into plastic pellets to be returned to industrial manufacture, says Sharpak, a member of Groupe Guillin.

Andrew Copson, Managing Director at Sharpak in Yate says: “This campaign represents an effective collaboration between Sharpak, the Plastic Heroes organisation and retailers – setting the pace and example for other countries to follow. It is estimated that by the end of 2012, 42% of all Dutch plastics packaging will be recycled efficiently.”

He adds: “At Sharpak, we continue to canvass for a closed system in the UK developing materials that are environmentally friendly and contain the highest levels of post consumer waste as well as natural minerals. The success of projects like this helps us build our case for the UK, to encourage relevant parties to exploit the benefits of recycling plastic packaging.”
