SCA closes 11 European plants

13 May 2009

SCA is to close 11 corrugated board plants in Europe over the next year.

The move is expected to result in the loss of 2200 jobs and comes on top of the 1000 employees that were cut during 2008. Currently, SCA Packaging employs 23,561 people in some 30 countries.

The reductions form part of a cost-cutting exercise as the company reacts to the effects of the recession. SCA predicts it will save SEK 1,070m annually as a result of the cutbacks. In addition, the company is bringing forward the closure of the New Hythe mill in the UK to mid 2009. It had originally been due to close in 2010.

SCA is also cutting production for liner amounting to 160,000 tonnes during the first two quarters of this year.
