SAICA plans £40mn UK spend

3 February 2009

Following its acquisition of SCA’s corrugated business in 2008, SAICA Packaging UK is to invest £40mn into several of the acquired manufacturing sites in the UK. The Spanish owned company will also close its plants at Winsford and Aylesford, make up to 264 posts redundant and create more than 100 new jobs.

The main sites expected to benefit from the new investment are in Wigan, Thrapston and Thatcham.

Ramón Alejandro, executive vice-president of SAICA, says: “We are investing heavily behind manufacturing in the UK as we believe the long term prognosis for the business is good and we want to be in a position to provide the best possible service to UK based customers. We intend to follow through on our commitment to the UK, and create a world class manufacturing capability.”

As part of the £40mn investment package, SAICA will be purchasing two 2.8 corrugators for the UK operations.
