S+S upgrades UK plastics recycling

1 November 2010

The first of S+S Group’s new Flake Purifier to be installed in the UK has been commissioned at Closed Loop Recycling’s Dagenham plant, which converts 35,000 tonnes/yr of used PET and HDPE bottles into raw material for new food and drink packaging.

The Flake Purifier uses NIR (Near Infra Red) and CCD camera technologies to sort mixed plastics flakes by both colour and polymer type at a high throughput.

S+S metal removal and colour-sorting systems have been in place since the Dagenham plant was opened in mid-2009.

“Our Dagenham plant was the first to use state of the art technology to sort, wash and super clean both PET and HDPE bottles meeting EU and US FDA standards, and the new S+S Flake Purifier enhances our capability,” says Closed Loop’s MD, Chris Dow.
