RPC SuperLock pots break new ground for salami packaging

21 January 2014

RPC Superfos has provided pots from its SuperLock range for a groundbreaking new salami packaging concept by Norwegian sliced meats company Grilstad.

Through a survey in Norway, Grilstad discovered that consumers were not satisfied with the available packaging for sliced salami and would prefer a twist-off, screw-on lid to replace the traditional tear-open flexible pack.

Aiming to be the first on the market with this new type of salami packaging, Grilstad developed the idea with RPC Superfos, adding the concept of also using the SuperLock pot upside down so that the lid acts as a serving dish.

The pot can then be resealed, both enhancing ease of use and minimising food waste.

Terje Sørnes, development manager at Grilstad, says: “We chose the SuperLock pot because it is the only solution on the market offering three desirable qualities all in one: an oxygen barrier, decoration with In-Mould Labelling and a twist-off screw-on lid.”

Grilstad reports good sales since the 1 September 2013 launch for all three of its varieties: Jubelsalami, Supersalami and Trønderfår in 120g and 150g variants.

The Norwegian company has also received substantial media coverage in print and online as a result of the innovation.
