RFID conference and exhibition attracts "blue chip" audience

15 June 2005

Earlier this month over 250 senior representatives from top names in the European food, pharmaceutical and FMCG and packaging sectors converged on Westminster's QEII Conference & Exhibition Centre for a high level conference co-hosted by Packaging Today's sister magazine, RFID Solutions, on the growing proliferation of RFID technology across the global retail and industrial supply chains.

The GS1 UK EPCglobal conference and exhibition, held in conjunction with leading UK RFID, barcoding and e-commerce body GS1UK, also attracted 27 exhibitors – hardware and software suppliers, systems integrators, middleware specialists and other technology providers.

Key morning speakers included GS1 UK chairman James Spittle and ceo Steve Coussins, Chris Adcock, president of global RFID and electronic product code body EPCglobal, Wal-Mart's chief RFID strategist Simon Langford, Astra Zeneca's global RFID project director John Morgan and Ross Hall, ceo of BT Auto-ID Services.

After a Sato-sponsored lunch, and workshops on topics including the business case for RFID and achieving EPCglobal compliance in the real world, delegates chose between three streams focussing on RFID implementation in the manufacturing and packaging, warehousing and distribution and retailing spheres. Speakers in the former included Kraft Foods' director of international B2B strategies Peter Jordan, Packaging Federation ceo Ian Dent and Sato's manager – RFID Solutions Worldwide Richard Scott.

Companies highlighting their RFID experience in the other streams included Microsoft, Tesco, ADT Europe, Chep, Jaguar Land Rover and hardware supplier Zebra Technologies Europe.

Conference highlights will appear in Packaging Today's next issue – for a full report see the Autumn 2005 issue of RFID Solutions.

News of next year's event will be announced later this year.
