The new Carlsberg Circular Community (CCC) sustainability initiative will see the world’s largest glass container manufacturer O-I, and Europe’s leading beverage can manufacturer Rexam, collaborating with the brewing giant on future packaging developments.
The new CCC initiative will use the Cradle-to-Cradle design framework to work towards zero-waste production, aiming to create clean materials streams that are optimised for reuse and recycling, through the sharing of knowledge between companies.
According to O-I, the new partnership will result in the launch of Carlsberg’s first Cradle to Cradle-certified glass packaging solution by 2016.
“We believe that collaborating throughout the value chain will bring new and innovative packaging solutions,” says Erik Bouts, president of O-I Europe.
John Revess, director of group sustainability at Rexam, adds: “As a manufacturer, Rexam has a responsibility to work in an increasingly sustainable way. By partnering with our customers and the full supply chain, we can further improve the environmental impact of our industry as a whole.”
Carlsberg Group president and CEO Jørgen Buhl Rasmussen says: “This cooperation is a great example of companies planning together for the future, creating solutions to the global challenges that face us all.”
Supported by the technical expertise of Hamburg research institute EPEA, Cradle-to-Cradle looks to rethink the design and production of traditional packaging material, with the aim of developing products optimised for recycling and reuse, while at the same time retaining their quality and value.
O-I’s Glass Is Life movement promotes the widespread benefits of glass packaging in key markets around the globe.
Rexam is one of the leading global beverage can makers and a major global player in rigid plastic packaging for healthcare applications.
