Research into renewable resources

7 October 2008

Biodegradable packaging supplier Biopac and Brunel University are conducting DEFRA-backed research into alternative crop uses as natural, renewable and cost-effective industrial packaging.

Following initial examination of processing cereal straws for fibre packaging, a second project aims to develop a range of bio-composites based on whole utilisation of renewable wheat straw for industrial applications.

Wheat straw is an annually renewable, low cost and abundant source of natural fibre in the UK. Brunel University and Biopac say they are extremely encouraged by research so far and believe that this research could provide “precisely what manufacturers have been searching for”.

The University is also introducing Biopac’s existing range of disposable catering packaging, which is fully compostable, biodegradable and made from natural and renewable resources.
