Resealing the beverage can

29 May 2008

Ball Packaging Europe of Ratingen, Germany, has solved this problem by launching the resealable beverage can. Incorporating a new type of can end manufactured from plastic and aluminium, known as the 'Ball Resealable End', it is possible to reseal both steel and aluminium cans after initial opening. The container has brilliant printing characteristics and achieves fast chilling and a long shelf-life. It can be easily recycled.

Coca-Cola is the first company to commission the cans, using the 500ml resealable can for its 'Burn' energy drink, recently launched on the French market. The Ball Resealable End is an aluminium can end integrating a flat opening mechanism made from plastic. A simple rotating movement uncovers the opening. The new beverage can thus retains its classic shape and its stackability. The total amount of plastic material used in the end is minimal and does not affect its recycling properties. The traditional tamper-proof feature is also retained, as the consumer can easily verify that the seal has not been broken prior to opening. Development work involved coalescing the dual requirements of easy opening, yet ensuring drip-tightness and pressure stability.
