Rapra expert addresses extractables and leachables conference

8 September 2010

Polymer and composite consultancy Smithers Rapra’s principal consultant Dr Martin Forrest will focus on the pharmaceutical supply chain in his presentation to the International Conference on Extractables and Leachables Products 2010 in London on 14 and 15 September.

The paper titled Origins of Extractables and Leachables will explain the many sources of extractables and leachables from polymeric packaging materials and medical devices components. The substances can occur during manufacture by inclusion of additives or the use of different processing methods, or be due to natural ageing and environmental effects while in service.

Extractables and leachables studies are gaining a higher profile with regulatory authorities,” observes Smithers Rapra’s Managing Director, Mike Day. Dr Forrest’s 25 years with the company makes him ‘the obvious choice’ to talk on such an important topic, he adds.

The conference will cover extractables and leachable responsibilities at every level of the pharmaceutical supply chain. Pharmaceutical companies are requesting increasing information from suppliers on the outcomes of polymers being used in the manufacturing and packaging of drugs, states Rapra.
