Print costs cut for popcorn

17 February 2004

Alcan has 'bagged' the packaging contract for Butterkist, one of the UK's leading popcorn brands.

The Salterbeck, Cumbria site's latest developments in flexo printing technology and its resulting ability to cut Butterkist's print costs have seen the packs switch from gravure to process flexo printing in eight colours.

Three popcorn flavours - toffee, sweet and salt, in a range of sizes from 35g upwards and a multipack - are now packaged in the new flexo-printed bags, which are formed from polypropylene laminated to a metallised film for added freshness. The specification has also seen a slight change in the multipackÕs design.

"Alcan Packaging is providing us with a considerable cost saving with no compromise in quality," explains Butterkist brand manager Rachel Chapman. "The recent developments in flexo printing have produced a stylish pack with high shelf impact."
