Plastics disc cases replaced by board

Finnish communications and ICT company Elisa is changing to new, environmentally sound packaging for its broadband, mobile phone and cable TV products – board based DBS cases produced by Stora Enso Media Solutions.

Last year, Elisa conducted a market survey that clearly showed that the end users and partners wanted more environmental friendly packaging and mailing materials. The company also sought savings in transport costs by using lower weight packages.

Stora Enso Media Solutions came up with its convenient DBS Discbox Slider case, which is made entirely from cartonboard. It now manufactures three different series of DBS cases for Elisa.

Stora Enso has calculated that the CO2 emissions of the DBS case are only 10 per cent of those of a plastics jewel case, while its space saving design and low weight are said to improve transport efficiency and save mailing costs.

"We use the DBS cases for packaging our optical discs, SIM cards and booklets," says Anne Korkiakoski, Elisa’s communications director. “The shift to the new, environmentally friendly DBS cases contributes to our goal of taking the environmental aspect into consideration throughout our operations. When you don't need the disc case anymore, you can dispose of it in the cardboard collection for recycling."

"Other advantages claimed for the DBS cases over the plastics cases are the large printable area, the innovative and slim design, non-crackable material and very light weight.
