Plastic packs stand up to river gravel

29 November 2005

Leeds-based flexible packaging company National Flexible has successfully met "the significant technical challenge" of producing a stand-up plastic pack strong enough to hold up to 10kg of natural river gravel targeted at gardeners, horticulturalists, fish and aquarium enthusiasts by Lincolnshire-based aquatic rock specialist Trilcot.

"Most highly coloured stones look good in aquariums, but the drawback is that they're not natural," explains Trilcot operations director Paul Teesdale. "Now we've secured this new source of river gravel we can offer a completely natural alternative."

The packaging needed not only to be sufficiently strong to hold the weight of the abrasive contents, but also high in clarity, print receptive and with good seal integrity.

Following extensive trials, with bags produced on a vertical form/fill/seal machine, National Flexible perfected two sizes of bag produced from a custom-made nylon/polythene laminate. The company says the "sturdy, eye-catching" flexo-printed bags are already "going down well" at trade fairs and on the retail market.
