PET bottles weigh in at just 5g

15 January 2007

PET Engineering has unveiled a100ml monodose PET bottle intended mainly for dairy-based and functional drinks which weighs just 5g.

Designed as an alternative to the HDPE containers used in these markets, the bottle was conceived in partnership with Canadian injection moulding machinery supplier Husky Injection Moulding Systems, American fibre and polymer specialist Invista and Sleever International. PET Engineering says it is around 2g lighter than “similar containers in today's market”.

Key to its development is a special preform, tailor-made to allow weight to be reduced to the minimum while maintaining “excellent technical performance”|. Two versions are available: one made from PET and the other from Invista's PolyShield PET barrier resin. An additional light barrier can be added if required.

A specially developed snap-on cap enables further weight reduction via sealing with aluminium film.
