PET bottle weight reduced

3 April 2008

Krones has developed a 0.5 litre PET bottle that weighs just 8.8g - 28-45 per cent compared with standard equivalents. It has been developed in response to considerations of environmental protection and cost reduction.

“Every tenth of a gramme less per bottle results in enormous material and cost savings during the course of a year,” the company states. “This reduces the use of natural resources, particularly as standard PET can be used as the preform material.

Considerable material savings have been made in the mouthpiece, which weighs only 1.96g instead of the conventional mouthpiece at around 3.5g. The new bottle also has a wall thickness of just 0.1mm - around 20-30 per cent less than standard versions - yet, when filled, it will withstand a top loading weight of 33kg, which is crucial to ensuring palletizing stability.
