Payback promised on traceability system

Domino Printing Sciences and Omron Electronics say their new, jointly developed Product Traceability System (PTS) aims to "overcome the high cost and complexity of RFID adoption for hard-pressed branded goods suppliers striving to meet retailer requirements".

Simon King, Domino's outer case coding director, says: "The solution will provide payback; it's not just an on-cost."

The non-contact, RF tag application and inline digital print system reportedly ensures total integrity of barcode and RFID tag by offering inline human readable data, barcoding and RFID in combination.

While this is "a major advantage" of the PTS system, the biggest selling points are the separation of the RF tag from the barcoded data and human readable information, combined with non-contact application. Because the RFID tag is not embedded in the barcoded label, both can be read independently and the tag placed in the position of choice.

"Contact systems may cause degradation of RFID tags or the thermal print face used to apply the barcode and human readable data," explains King. "PTS avoids such issues and, because the system is modular, customers can start quickly with the cost benefits of inline digital barcode printing and add RFID capability retrospectively."

Additionally, because tags can be applied in the optimum read position, the system could eliminate problems associated with reading RF tags successfully when close to metals and liquids.
