Packaging weight reduced

27 August 2009

Major UK retailer Sainsbury’s has reently changed the packaging of its soft fruit range from trays with rigid clip-on lids to a heat-sealed flexible lidding film from Amcor Flexibles. This new format allows Sainsbury’s to reduce the packaging weight by up to 87 per cent, and is available for strawberries, cherries and plums.

“By replacing the plastic lids on our strawberries with sealed film, we are able to sve 333 tonnes of plastics per annum and provide our customers with an easy peel opening solution,” explains Stuart Lendrum, packaging manager at Sainsbury’s.

A further advantage of the move to flexible film is the printability of the lid, thus making the use of labels redundant.
