Packaging Wallace's favourite

18 July 2008

Specialising in the cheese favoured by cartoon character Wallace, the Wensleydale Creamery of North Yorkshire decided to find a new packaging format to launch its new white and blue cheeses into the premium retail market.

Working in partnership with the award-winning cheese manufacturer, Smurfit Kappa developed a composite tube container with a strong rustic feel and appearance, reflecting the heritage of the Wensleydale Creamery cheeses. The sophisticated-looking packs were six- and seven-colour litho printed, clearly positioning the cheese as a premium quality product.

Holding a 500g cheese truckle, the composite tube needed to both create impact at point-of-sale and provide safe transit across the supply chain. The pack incorporates two small holes in the body of the container. This enables the cheese to breathe and continue the maturing process during its journey to the consumer's fridge.

The composite container, comprising a body, base and lid, is totally recyclable. Furthermore, this attractive pack can be reused as a storage container, thereby maintaining brand awareness for an extended period. The body is biodegradable, being manufactured from totally recycled fibres, with the inner liner and outer label comprising a mix of recycled and virgin fibres. The tinplate lid and base is sourced from within Europe, containing at least 54 per cent recycled steel.

Sandra Bell, Marketing Manager, Wensleydale Creamery commented: "We are delighted with the work of Smurfit Kappa Composites, they have delivered a practical pack with real on-shelf presence."
