Out of the frying pan......into the pouch

19 February 2007

Dutch cooking oil and fat supplier Levo Produktenmij has launched a smart waste reduction innovation for the catering sector – a five-litre flexible pouch as an alternative to bulky tins or buckets for frying oil.

The pouch allows foodservice operators to empty the oil in their fryers and discard the packaging easily by folding it up and throwing it away.

After seeing the pouch at a trade fair, Levo owner and manager Jurjen Rollingswier developed a five-litre sample with Sealed Air Cryovac to test the market, incorporating a bag clip for hermetic sealing between uses.

Said to prolong shelf life, convenience and security, the Cryovac pouches are made of fully coextruded, multilayer, high barrier film. The technology provides a pack with no headspace, formed, heatsealed and separated into a finished hermetic puncture-resistant pillow pouch, which saves space and reportedly requires some 40% less packaging material than existing frying oil packs.
