OPP cut-and-stack first

5 May 2004

Label and flexible packaging converter Printpack and wet glue labelling specialist S&C Labels have collaborated to supply what they believe are the world's first gravure-printed OPP labels to be applied to an alcoholic beverage on a cut-and-stack labeller.

The five-colour labels have been applied on a Krones wet glue labeller by microbrewer Aston Manor to the flint glass bottles used for its Kingstone Press cider.

Last Autumn Printpack and S&C supplied what they claim were the world's first ever gravure printed cut and stack-applied OPP beverage labels to Ice Valley Water.

Printpack and S&C say brewers have successfully cut-and-stack applied paper labels for years but claim it is only since their collaboration that the facility has existed to similarly apply OPP labels.

With the Kingstone Press labels, Printpack printed on the film's reverse to give a high gloss finish and superior opacity. The two companies are now talking to several larger brewers.
