New entrant on UK packaging compliance scene

9 November 2009

In the UK, strategic outsourcing and asset management company MITIE has launched a packaging waste compliance scheme with tailored membership packages.

MITIEpack members can also benefit from in-house training, data collection, auditing, and waste minimisation guidance.

“This addition to traditional compliance management has been well received by our existing clients already as it represents a fresh, new approach within the industry,”

said Ian Baxter, director of MITIE’s waste and environmental team.

The Packaging Regulations apply to any company handling more than 50 tonnes of packaging in a year and has a turnover above £2m. Qualifying companies have to register with the UK Environment Agency. They must meet set recycling targets and purchase Packaging Recycling Notes (PRNs) to cover this obligation.

The fees help fund the recycling infrastructure and ensure the UK meets targets applied by a European Directive. Many companies will outsource their PRN purchase by joining a compliance scheme.
