New activeCell ‘low-investment’ alternative for ISO 7 cleanroom manufacturing

26 September 2012

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s new activeCell self-contained injection moulding cleanroom machine system is said to help manufacturers without a full cleanroom facility to expand into ISO class 7 manufacturing.

The Germany-headquartered company says its all-electric compact turnkey activeCell system manufactures pharmaceutical and medical, single or multicomponent plastic components to ISO 7 (class 10,000), and comes complete with platen mounted six-axis robot, laminar airflow cabinets for particle free air in the mould-space area and integral packaging equipment.

Offering manufacturers a “low-investment entry into cleanroom manufacturing”, and available in 100, 160, 220 and 280 tonne formats, activeCell is installed fully compliant, meeting GAMP and FDA requirements as well as DQ, IQ and OQ documentation.

“For many medical and pharmaceutical manufacturers a cleanroom facility is often a significant investment, not always essential for their production needs and can be cost prohibitive when looking to expand into niche markets,” says Sumitomo (SHI) Demag MD Nigel Flowers.

The compact fully guarded cell is only 500mm wider than a standard machine, and combines technologies from Sumitomo (SHI) Demag’s UK-based technology partners Motoman (robotics), AVT (packaging) and Max Petek (laminar flow hood).

Flowers describes activeCell’s six-axis robot as “a value-add for manufacturers looking for expansion options and fast pay back”, as it offers secondary operations including assembly and palletizing, in addition to its primary purpose of accurately transferring product to the conveyor system, chute or packaging system as required.

Operating as a system integrator, Sumitomo (SHI) Demag oversees the entire project and provides rapid response, post-sales service, customer support and spares for the entire system via its UK-based team.

Sumitomo (SHI) Demag Plastics Machinery UK is a wholly owned subsidiary of Demag Plastics Group in Schwaig, Germany. Demag Plastics Group specialises in engineering injection moulding machines with clamping forces between 250 kN and 20,000 kN.
