MWV 'invisible' dip tube will be patented

3 February 2010

MeadWestvaco (MWV) has just been awarded a Notice of Allowance from the US Patent and Trademark Office on a patent application for fragrance products and dispenser assemblies incorporating its NoC dip tubes. A US patent is expected to follow, and related patent applications are pending in the USA and other countries.

The NoC dip tube uses light refracting technology to make it virtually invisible in a fragrance. At the recent PCD conference and exhibition in Paris, the NoC dip tube was being demonstrated in conjuction with the Melodie Clikit IP (injection plastic) pump, actuator and collar. Sandy Gregory told Packaging Today: “Melodie Clikit IP is made of plastic, rather than aluminium, so there is no need for lacquering. With aluminium, lacquering has to be used if white is the colour required. A variety of finishes can be achieved, such as black, glitter, irridiscent, pearl and soft touch, and any colour can be applied. The design can be customised with endless patterns including flowers, tortoiseshell – anything to make it stand out on shelf.

“Making the pump an integral part of the design is achieved with a technique called sublimation, which can be used on glass as well, so the design on the top can match the bottle if desired. All the components are made in-house, so we are not dependent on outside suppliers

Ms Gregory told Packaging Today that the first delivery to a major brand owner in Europe will take place this month.
