M&S clear on packaging reduction

Marks & Spencer is now using Harrison Europac’s latest high clarity polypropylene (PP) range of containers, stating that this move has reduced its packaging on a product range by 30 per cent.

The retail giant was looking to re-vamp its range of ready meals, which were previously packed in a black tray within an outer cardboard skillet. Since the contents are made with fresh ingredients, which have a high visual and colourful impact, M&S wanted the packaging to provide exceptional transparency.

Mark Caul, senior packaging technologist at M&S, says: “We are extremely proud of our food offer and therefore clarity of packaging was important. We always consider the environment when selecting packaging and the lightweight solution offered by Harrison Europac’s trays was an attractive option.’’

The new, more modern tray with squared corners is claimed to combine a high clarity lid film with a minimal wrap-around label for the required consumer information.

Compared to the previous packaging, the new material is also said to provide improved uniformity to containers, helping to increase reliability and stability during high speed de-nesting, sealing and packing.
